Pressure-treated timber construction
Timber retaining walls provide a warm, natural wood appearance for low landscape terraces. We use heavy pressure-treated timbers secured together with steel rebar spikes and timber screws. You can review all material pricing options in our complete cost guide.
Deadman anchors and structural tying
To prevent timber walls from leaning forward over time, we install T-shaped timber deadman anchors. These anchors extend back into the hillside and are buried under compacted soil and gravel. We also build heavy concrete block retaining walls for steeper elevation changes.
Drainage preparation for timber preservation
Water accumulation accelerates wood rot, so proper drainage behind timber walls is critical. We install drainage behind the wall with perforated pipe and clear crushed stone behind all timber courses. Geotextile fabric keeps soil out of the drain rock layer.

Local permit and building requirements
Municipal bylaws determine permit thresholds for timber wall construction. Building permits are required for timber walls over 1.2 metres in Nanaimo, Qualicum Beach, Ladysmith, and Duncan, and at 1.2 m or higher in Parksville. RDN Bylaw 1250 excludes walls "under 1.0 m in height that retain less than 1.0 m of earth" from being counted as structures.
